Catch the Sonoma County Airport Express (groometransportation.com/sonoma-county) from San Francisco International Airport. There are four stops in Sonoma County, including the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS), where you can rent a car or take a taxi to the nearest winery.
The Golden Gate Transit (www.goldengate.org) operates buses from San Francisco to Petaluma and to Santa Rosa. Catch it at Main and Folsom streets, at the temporary Transbay Terminal.
Ride the ferry from the San Francisco Ferry Building to Larkspur Ferry (www.goldengate.org/ferry/route-schedule/larkspur-san-francisco). From there, catch Golden Gate Transit to Sonoma County.
Greyhound (www.greyhound.com) operates from San Francisco to Santa Rosa. There are transfers for local buses.
Sonoma County Transit (sctransit.com) runs the bus service from Santa Rosa to Petaluma, Sonoma, and western Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley towns.
Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) trains travel to Martinez, with connecting buses to Santa Rosa and Healdsburg.
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) (www.sonomamarintrain.org) is a rail service from San Rafael to the Sonoma County Airport, stopping in several Sonoma County towns: Petaluma, Cotati, Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa.
While in Sonoma County, plan on renting a car or book a chauffeured ride. Sonoma County has decent public transportation but, with about a million acres, the buses may not run to attractions and wineries you want to visit.
